Every Second Counts’ And Other Takeaways From ‘The Bear

Colby B. Jubenville, PhD, is an international speaker, author, educator and coach. He is the Host of the Goat Consulting Podcast.

“Every second counts”: This is the maxim that is brought to life in FX’s series The Bear, where the narrative teaches us that time is more than a commodity—it’s the glue of survival, strategy and human connection. From the opening, it’s clear that every second is precious and hesitation has consequences.

The Bear puts the life of Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning fine dining chef, front and center as he builds complex relationships while navigating a difficult season of his life. The series illustrates the sense of urgency of life’s critical moments and underscores the importance of decision-making where each second is a chance to make a difference.

As I followed each character through their trials, I witnessed their ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances. Whether it’s resolving conflict, building trust or making critical decisions in the heat of the moment, The Bear emphasizes one of my fundamental beliefs—how to use adversity to accelerate growth.

Along the way, The Bear reveals a universal truth: Adversity can build the deepest connections. As characters are thrust into situations where every second truly counts, bonds are formed and experiences are shared, embracing chaos and change. The show illustrates that during life’s most trying moments, human connection is the cornerstone of survival and resilience.

In today’s digitally driven world, the concept of connection is overshadowed by superficial interactions. The Bear serves as a reminder that building authentic relationships requires investing time, attention and effort. Just as characters in the series depend on one another for support, our own lives are better when we prioritize meaningful connections.

The characters’ pursuit of survival underlines the idea of embracing opportunities and making the most of every moment. The series mirrors life’s unpredictability and reminds us to live with intention, making the most of the present while planning for the future.

In the world of business and personal growth, the principle of “every second counts” is equally compelling. In seizing opportunities decisively, we unlock new challenges and opportunities. Like the characters in The Bear, we have the opportunity to navigate life with purpose and determination.

In each episode, The Bear delivers a message that resonates long after the show is over: “Every second counts.” In a society that rushes through moments without embracing them, this series serves as a wake-up call reminding us to value how we spend our time, make calculated decisions, adapt to change, build meaningful connections and embrace the unpredictable nature of life, business and relationships.

As I reflected on the series through the lens of coaching and personal growth, I found myself appreciating its ability to mirror life’s relentless tempo. The show isn’t merely a narrative; it is a canvas upon which we can project our own painting.

Painting these lessons into our daily lives can lead to deeper connection and greater impact while having a new appreciation for the commodity that we call time. Just as the characters of The Bear strive for survival in a world of uncertainty, we can navigate our lives with determination and the belief that every second of every minute does indeed count.
