Stefano is Founder of MergersCorp M&A International, Investment Banker and M&A Advisor with 15+ years international experience.

Mergers and acquisitions are often considered an important strategy for companies seeking to expand or achieve goals. In recent years, the M&A sector has seen significant evolutions, both in the strategic approach and in the technological resources used.

Based on my experience as an M&A advisor, here are some of the current trends I’m seeing, as well as a few of my predictions for the M&A industry in 2024:

Current Trends In The M&A Sector

• Growing focus on ESG-based ratings: In recent years, environmental, social and governance factors have gained increased awareness and relevance in the M&A and larger business world. Companies that exhibit strong performance in these areas can gain a competitive advantage and attract the attention of potential buyers. Through ESG analysis, investors evaluate not only the financial performance but also the social and environmental impacts of target companies.

• Increased cross-border M&A activity: I’ve also observed that more companies are considering expansion opportunities beyond national borders. Globalization and accessibility to international markets are contributing to cross-border M&A transactions in some regions. Companies seek to gain access to new markets, technologies, resources or specific skills that may only be available abroad.

• Growth of technology and digital innovation: Technological developments are transforming industries around the world, and the M&A sector is no exception. Many companies are looking to acquire or invest in innovative startups to gain a competitive advantage. I’m seeing sectors such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, e-commerce, Internet of Things and cloud computing become increasingly interesting for companies in the era of digital transformation.

Predictions For 2024

• Increase in M&A in health and healthcare technology: The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of health technology and healthcare delivery systems. In 2024, I believe there will be an increase in M&A transactions in this sector, with a specific focus on companies developing innovative solutions for telemedicine, the digitalization of healthcare data and artificial intelligence applied to medical diagnostics.

• Consolidation of the renewable energy sector: With consumers’ increasing focus on environmental sustainability and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, companies operating in the renewable energy sector will likely be high on the agenda of companies interested in expanding or diversification. I expect a sharp increase in M&A deals in the renewable energy sector in 2024, particularly in the solar and wind energy subsections.

• Increased M&A opportunities in the green technology sector: Governments around the world are adopting policies and incentives to transition to a greener economy. This opens up new opportunities in the area of clean technologies, such as solutions for waste management, recycling, sustainable mobility and energy efficiency. In 2024, I anticipate an increase in M&A transactions in this sector, especially as companies seek to capitalize on the emergence of new markets and technologies in the field of eco-sustainability.

What This Means For Leaders Moving Forward

The M&A sector is constantly evolving, and providing forecasts is always an exercise that involves a certain amount of uncertainty. However, based on current trends and factors that are influencing the global market, I believe mergers and acquisitions will remain an important tool for companies to expand and evolve their growth strategy. With more and more attention being paid to the environment and technological innovation, I expect 2024 to see an increase in M&A deals in the healthcare technology, renewable energy and green technology sectors.

It is crucial for leaders to pay attention to these trends and predictions, as they could directly impact strategic decision-making. Stay abreast of these developments to proactively shape your business strategies, identify potential partnerships or acquisitions and gain a competitive edge.

Understanding the M&A landscape can help leaders make informed choices, seize opportunities and navigate the evolving market dynamics effectively. Embracing these insights can empower leaders to thrive in the ever-changing business landscape of 2024 and beyond.
