Nine Guiding Principles New Marketers Should Follow Right Away

Getting started in any role can be intimidating, but this can be even more true for those new to marketing. In an industry that’s fast-paced and ever-changing, it’s essential to keep up with the latest trends as well as understand the tried-and-true basics of the trade.

With extensive experience marketing their own businesses, the members of Young Entrepreneur Council have their own thoughts about how to succeed in marketing. Here, they each share one rule or guiding principle they believe all new marketers should follow right off the bat and how doing so will affect their success in their role.

1. Know Your Users

The guiding principle I believe all new marketers should follow is to know your users. This is essential because it will help them create relevant marketing campaigns. There are several ways to get to know users. You can conduct surveys, focus groups or interviews. You can also analyze your website traffic and social channels. Once you have a good understanding of your users, you can start creating marketing campaigns. – Jay Dahal, Machnet

2. Adopt A Data-Driven Attitude

New marketers need to adopt a data-driven attitude. It empowers informed decision-making, optimization and effective targeting. You can improve outcomes, track progress and provide superior service to customers by making use of data and analytics. It’s vital to the success of any marketing campaign. – John Rampton, Calendar

3. Stay Curious

For new marketers, one crucial rule to follow from the start is to stay curious. Why? Because curiosity is the catalyst for growth and success in your role. By maintaining a curious mindset, you unlock a world of opportunities. Curiosity fuels innovation, allowing you to think creatively and come up with fresh ideas that captivate your audience. Curiosity also sharpens your problem-solving skills. – Pratik Chaskar, Spectra

4. Personalize Your Message

Personalization has become a crucial aspect of marketing today. Modern consumers expect brands to provide personalized experiences and content catering to their needs and preferences. To achieve this, marketers should leverage data and technology to tailor their messaging and offerings to their target audience. Further, personalization also increases conversion and retention rates. – Kelly Richardson, Infobrandz

5. Embrace Experimentation

I believe a crucial rule for new marketers is to continuously test and iterate their strategies. In the rapidly changing and dynamic marketing environment, what may be effective today could become obsolete tomorrow. By embracing a culture of experimentation and monitoring the results of campaigns, marketers can identify what resonates best with their audience and make data-driven decisions. – Ian Sells, JoinBrands.com

6. Think About People First

New marketers should be people-centric. Blatantly promoting the solutions that you offer doesn’t work anymore. Instead, you should understand the problems your target audience is facing and provide them with relevant information that can help them seek answers to their questions. This will help you build trust and they’ll pay heed to what you have to say or consider your recommendations. – Stephanie Wells, Formidable Forms

7. Prioritize Consistency

Stay consistent with your message and branding. Consistency is key to staying top of mind. Your brand colors, tone and messaging must remain the same as you frequently try to pop up on your prospect’s social platforms or email chains. You’ll know you have succeeded once people recognize your brand and create word-of-mouth. – Julian Hamood, Trusted Tech Team

8. Know Your Brand

“Know your brand” is the one rule that all new marketers should follow. Promoting your business to current and prospective customers is challenging if you don’t understand the company’s product, service or brand image. Following this rule will help further advance a marketer’s success in their role and career as it better aligns marketing with sales and customer support at a higher level. – Ian Blair, BuildFire

9. Test And Measure Everything

Test and measure everything you do. When exploring new strategies, have a specific goal in mind. Ensure that every goal you set as a part of your marketing campaign is measurable. This helps ensure the productive use of marketing resources and assets compared to haphazard or wishy-washy marketing campaigns, ensuring proper ROI for the marketing dollars spent. – Brian David Crane, Spread Great Ideas
