Five Skills To Help Develop An Entrepreneurial Mindset

Teja Chekuri – Global Entrepreneur, Founder & Managing Director of Ironhill Brewery.

As a seasoned entrepreneur, I’ve learned a few things about what it takes to have an entrepreneurial mindset. Irrespective whether you work for someone, work with someone or work for yourself, having an entrepreneurial mindset can give you an edge above the rest.

These are five skills I believe you should develop to be considered “entrepreneurial”:

1. Visionary Clarity: The GPS Of Success

It can help to imagine your entrepreneurial journey as a road trip, and having a clear vision is like having a GPS to guide you. Entrepreneurs need the ability to visualize their destination, even when the road ahead is foggy. This means not just seeing the big picture but also the intricate details.

Your vision should be so vivid that it’s practically a 3D hologram in your mind. When your vision is as crisp as a high-definition TV, you’ll find it much easier to set goals, make strategic decisions and inspire your team to follow your lead. Look to have a vision for your business like Steve Jobs had for the iPhone. You should be able to see the potential of your business, even when others don’t.

2. Adaptability: Being A Chameleon

Business landscapes are like ever-changing weather and highly unpredictable. To thrive, you need to be as adaptable as a chameleon changing colors.

If you haven’t already, you’ll quickly see that the business world throws curveballs and hailstorms, but it’s your ability to pivot and adapt that will keep your ship afloat. If Plan A doesn’t work, you should be ready with Plans B, C and Z. Think of it as a dance with the unknown, where you lead and adapt at the same time. Whether it’s a sudden market shift or a tech disruption, look to embrace change like a seasoned entrepreneur.

3. Risk Appetite: Taking The Leap With Style

If you’re not at least a little bit of a daredevil, entrepreneurship may not be your calling and neither is an entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurs aren’t afraid to take calculated risks.

Think of it as jumping off a cliff with a parachute you’ve designed yourself. It’s risky but exhilarating. But here’s the kicker: It’s not reckless risk-taking, but rather educated and informed decisions. You weigh the odds, research your options and then take the leap, all the while knowing that failure is just a stepping stone on the path to success.

4. Resilience: The Armor Of An Entrepreneur

In the world of entrepreneurship, rejection, setbacks and failures are like side dishes to your main course. That’s where resilience comes in. Picture it as your armor, shielding you from disappointment and discouragement.

Every no you hear should fuel your determination, and every challenge you face should only make you stronger. Like a spring that bounces back after being compressed, entrepreneurs need to spring back from adversity with even more force. Make sure you are passionate about your idea and therefore willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.

5. Networking Skills: The Web Of Opportunity

Entrepreneurship is at least partially a team sport. Your ability to connect with people, build relationships and create a web of opportunities can be the difference between a good idea and a successful business.

Who you know at what time can sometimes be crucial to the successful execution of an idea. Think of it as a web where each connection is a strand that can lead you to new opportunities, partnerships and invaluable insights. To help network, attend events and use social media to help build a diverse network that can support and elevate your entrepreneurial journey.

A Bonus Tip: Humor

I’ve found that being able to laugh at yourself and your mistakes is essential for any entrepreneur. This can help you stay positive and keep moving forward even when things are tough.

I believe if you have these five skills, then you’re well on your way to having an entrepreneurial mindset—one that will help you excel at a job or a business you own.

Forbes Business Council is the foremost growth and networking organization for business owners and leaders. Do I qualify?
