Apple iOS 17.1.1 iPhone Software Release: Should You Upgrade?

We’re less than two months into the new iPhone software and already there’s another update. A small one, this time, but important. You can read my rundown of exactly what’s in the new release here. Read on for how it’s been received since its release on Tuesday, November 7.

I’ll be updating this post over the next week to take into account any problems that arise, so please check back.

Who Is It For?

Apple iOS 17.1.1 works with all iPhones compatible with iOS 17, that is, handsets from the iPhone XS onwards. Updates are available automatically but you may find you have it on your iPhone sooner if you click on Settings, then General, then Software Update.

What It’s About

This small update has no new features and only focuses on bug fixes and repairing problems.

Apple Release Notes

Apple said:

This update provides bug fixes for your iPhone including:

In rare circumstances, Apple Pay and other NFC features may become unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars.

Weather Lock Screen widget may not correctly display snow.

Apple iOS 17.1.1 Security

Security is usually the most pressing reason to upgrade, but there are no security flaws mentioned by Apple this time around, so it looks like this is not the purpose of this release.

Initial Reactions

Well, there’s certainly been some dissatisfaction. One Redditor commented, “This must be a joke. People report so many bugs and Apple only releases updates for these two bugs. Errors such as square-cornered notifications, volume keys not working in third-party applications, and keyboard click sound being loud or stuttering still persist since iOS 16.”

While I’m sure Apple is working on these problems, it must be annoying to see a new update that doesn’t resolve your issues.

That said, there’s very little in the way of complaints that iOS 17.1.1 has done any harm.

Apple iOS 17.1 Initial Verdict: Update

If you’re a BMW owner, it may be that your car could be prone to the Apple Pay issue mentioned above—there were reports of the phone getting so hot it was causing damage, though note it only affected the latest iPhone 15 series models . If you charge your iPhone in your car, you probably don’t want to find Apple Pay and other features have vanished, so you’ll definitely want to update.

For everyone else, there doesn’t seem to be a reason not to update, at least not yet. There’s no widespread response of battery life failing or new problems arising—even if the most desired fixes are still not in evidence. Check back for my final verdict in a week, please.

What’s Coming Next

The news for what’s coming is the same as it was last time, it’s just that iOS 17.1.1 snuck in. Apple is already working on iOS 17.2. It includes the Journal app, which many have been waiting for, iMessage Contact Key verification and fixes for wifi connectivity issues. It’s expected within a few weeks, unless there’s another little update, or even a Rapid Security Response in the meant
