Everyone was somewhat baffled when Marvel revealed that none other than Robert Downey Jr. would be playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, and possibly beyond that. The actor who started the MCU as Tony Stark was returning to the universe after his character died as a new character, something we’ve never seen before.
We’re all still confused. There have been no real updates or even leaks from Doomsday about this since then. Closer to this reveal, we were told he was literally Victor Von Doom, not just alternate universe Tony Stark. Again, skepticism, but the cast seems extremely enthused about it.
Here’s a new interview with Simu Liu, who is returning, at last, as Shang-Chi in Doomsday.
“When asked who inspires him the most, Liu replied, “The simple answer is Robert Downey Jr.” He continued, “He really inspires me,” praising Downey Jr., who makes a surprise return as Doctor Doom.”
“He’s been an integral part of Marvel’s success and has been in so many films over the years, yet he still takes the time to meet and connect with so many people. He’s such a kind, generous, and inspiring person. Because he’s played such a diverse range of roles, I think everyone will be blown away by the way he tackles this new character (Doctor Doom) in this film.”
This echoes similar sentiments from other members of the cast. This was Joseph Quinn speaking to People about Downey Jr.:
“He’s an amazing leader. He’s so generous. He’s hilarious, and he’s a remarkable actor. There’s no shock as to why he is where he is,” Quinn said.
There was one, very brief rumor that Robert Downey Jr. was sparring with Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds on set, where Deadpool has not even been announced as being part of the cast. There was no actual evidence any of that took place, and was denied by both camps, so I am prone to dismiss it out of hand.
Simu’s quotes especially lead me to return to a theory I’ve had since Downey Jr. was announced, that there is no Tony Stark conspiracy here. This really is just Downey Jr. playing an entirely new character. A different look (I mean, he’ll be behind a mask a lot anyway) and just…acting. He’s an actor. He can play a wildly different character that is nothing like Tony Stark and his rapid quips at all. I would actually prefer this to some sort of insane multiverse shenanigans bending over backward to explain why Victor von Doom looks like Tony Stark. My gut, however, tells me that is likely to be the case based on where Marvel has gone with the whole multiverse idea. It seems to coincidental to be ignored, but oh well, we’ll see.
