I Have An Admittedly Ridiculous Idea To Save ‘Destiny 2’

Destiny Classic! Destiny 3! We have a range of ideas in terms of where Destiny goes from here, and I am going to throw my hat in the ring in terms of a somewhat ridiculous idea that the game might implement going forward.

I suppose this is a variant of Destiny Classic, but in a way, I think it could be at least more feasible than fan-voted reprisals and such. I do think maybe we could go back in time a bit and…reprise old seasons.

I’m taking this from The Division 2, which did this periodically during dead times, and the idea is this:

  • Do a highlight reel of bringing back fan-favorite Destiny 2 seasons.
  • Recent seasons would be more likely to be featured. Season of Opulence, for instance, would require large chunks of Leviathan, and it was before the Beyond Light wipe where remaining content was remade with Destiny 2’s new tech.
  • Splicer, Lost, Defiance, Witch, Wish, etc. maybe even an Episodes or two. And if they could reach back to pre-Beyond Light, there are some beloved ones there too.
  • It would be the whole season. Story missions, the weekly updates it had, and whatever new activities it brought. Newer players would get to play content they missed and at least go through one coherent storyline from Destiny’s past. Veteran players could grind out the armor and weapons from those seasons, but Bungie would update them with Tiers and the activities with new difficulty levels they may not have had before. Set bonuses for the armor, etc.
  • I don’t think this even requires removal of The Portal. The idea of The Portal was never that bad by itself; it is bad if it’s the entire game, more or less, the way it is now. Here, you would have seasonal activities to grind for a dedicated, seasonal reprised loot pool. They could still have gear specific to the Portal to grind there, but you could make power/loot tier progress by playing either thing.
  • I don’t think plucking a story or activities out of time is as disruptive as it may appear. I mean, people are already playing Portal activities that have 15-minute out-of-context storylines from seven years of the game. At least putting an entire season back in the mix would make one coherent story for a period of time and an appropriate loot pool outside of a bunch of random Portal crap. You could maybe also reprise raids or dungeons that arrived during those seasons (some are already in the game), if possible, with the Tier system for that loot again. Though maybe that’s a bridge too far.

Is this viable? Ehhh, I can’t declare that. This may have most of the problems Destiny Classic would, and with all the tech debt and other issues in the game, simply taking a season off a drive somewhere and sticking it into the game is not how these things work. Though again, The Division did this to some extent, so it’s possible a game in this genre could do this. It’s just a matter of whether Destiny could do this.

The current story would progress through the new expansions, but if we are never going to get real “new” seasons back at this point, I think you could do worse than re-living some of the classics with desirable new loot and a non-Portal-only grind.
