Here’s Why Every Business Leader Should Consider Meditation

Josh Felber is the CEO/CMO of 10x Training Systems LLC, uncovering the mindset and success strategies of the top 1%.

By now, we have all heard and read about the benefits of meditation. CEOs and celebrities often swear by their daily meditation practice. Some even attribute their success to it. The word “mindfulness” has rightfully received a lot of buzz in the last few years. Meditation is the art of training your mind and gaining a sense of control over it. It involves conscious observation of your thoughts and focusing on your breath.

Meditation is my secret weapon as a business leader. It provides me with the mental clarity and focus needed to make critical decisions. I’ve seen a drop in my stress levels since I started meditating. It has taught me how to remain calm as I navigate challenges with composure. Meditation also fosters creativity, allowing me to think outside the box and come up with innovative ideas.

Based on my experience, here are four ways CEOs can apply the lessons of meditation to their professional lives.

1. Improve Your Productivity

According to Wharton research from 2019, meditating for even a few minutes each day can help make you more productive. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has previously spoken about how his meditation practice benefits him by helping him overcome “concentration fatigue.”

Our minds tend to wander, even at work. We may be in a meeting but are thinking about a task that needs attention later in the day. We may be working on a file but our mind goes back to something that a colleague said yesterday.

Meditation can help curb that tendency to get distracted easily by bringing about an awareness of the mind. Part of this is noticing our interruptions and controlling them. Work requires us to process a lot of information each day. I’ve found that meditation can help me identify and blur out what is not required and focus on that which is essential.

2. Enhance Your Emotional Intelligence

In an interview with the New York Times, Bill Ford, Chairman of Ford Motor Company, shared how he has benefited from meditating, citing that “Meditating brings you back to the fact that at the end of the day, you’re no different than anybody else.”

Meditation can be a potent tool for developing emotional intelligence. As a leader, you need to empathize with your employees’ problems. When they feel heard and understood, they typically perform better. Emotional intelligence is the one aspect of your leadership that could set you apart from other managers and leaders.

Start to become more attuned to the needs and feelings of your team. This can enhance communication and empathy within your workplace.

3. Practice Non-Reactivity

People who meditate tend to be less reactive in trying situations—that is, they are less likely to get frustrated and angry. Feeling calm and composed when faced with a problem can help you come up with a solution faster. When you feel a sense of peace and are more self-aware, you are likely to make better decisions.

By regularly tuning into your thoughts and emotions during meditation, you can enhance your self-awareness and practice non-reactivity. I find that this heightened self-awareness enables me to better understand my own emotional responses. In fact, it helps me understand the responses of others as well.

Meditation trains you to observe your thoughts without immediate judgment or reaction. I believe that this practice translates to my role as a business leader in helping me bring a calm, level-headed approach to my leadership style. When faced with stressful or challenging situations, avoid reacting impulsively. Instead, take a step back, analyze the situation objectively and respond thoughtfully.

4. Prioritize Effectively

Regular meditation sessions provide mental clarity and focus, helping you tackle tasks with efficiency and precision. As I said earlier in the article, it has helped alleviate my stress levels. We know that stress is a productivity killer. With a clearer mind and lower stress levels, you’ll likely find it easier to manage your workload and prioritize mission-critical tasks.

Meditation encourages introspection, allowing you to identify your core values and long-term goals. In my experience, being armed with this clarity helps me make more informed decisions about where to allocate my time and resources. When you don’t get caught up in distractions, you’re more adept at prioritizing projects and tasks that align with your vision for your business.

Final Thoughts

Here are a few final pointers if you’re just starting out:

• Be patient with yourself. The benefits of daily practice can take time to show.

• Be kind to yourself. The first few days will likely feel difficult or even boring. Keep going.

• Do what you can to make it easier. Sit in a comfortable position and eliminate distractions like your phone or the television.

Incorporating meditation into your daily routine is not just about personal well-being—it’s a strategic tool for enhancing leadership skills, fostering a positive work environment and achieving business success. Meditation is something we need to keep talking about as business leaders and work to incorporate it as part of our daily routines. Here’s hoping each one of you begins and experiences the benefits firsthand.
